Has Jason Momoa finally made Aquaman cool?

Now I know that this sounds like a rather farfetched question but ask yourself, is it possible? Yes, there is a strong possibility that he has.

Aquaman has long since been ridiculed by fans of D.C as a particularly useless superhero in the grand scheme of things. So much so that D.C even had a little dig at their own character in Justice League when Bruce Wayne locates Arthur Curry. “Arthur Curry, I hear you can talk to fish”, that is basically his only super power. He can breathe underwater and talk to fish.

So who do you cast to make this particular Superhero cool again? Up to the plate steps Jason Momoa. Until landing a leading role in Stargate Atlantis as Ronan Dex, Momoa was relatively unknown, unless you were a fan of the later series of Baywatch. Ronan Dex quickly became a fan favourite. Even then it was really till Game of Thrones where he takes on the role as Khal Drogo that the rest of the world really took a shine to him.

By this stage, we know Momoa can do action and do it well but can he make Aquaman cool? After his performance in Justice League and some serious badassery, I believe that he could. Whether you have seen Justice League or not, this cheeky poster for Aquaman teases again that this could be true.

While not giving anything away…apart from the fact we can probably expect quite a few sharks, whales, dolphins, turtles and stingrays and with Momoa in the middle with his mean looking five tine Quindent (yes, I know but I’m not getting into that now), it does make for quite an awesome scene. Even without the sealife around him, he just looks badass with his traditional menacing grin and five tine trident / quindent, what ever you want to call it, it looks awesome.

Alongside Momoa’s potentially cool Aquaman we do have quite a strong supporting cast. Amber Heard will be taking on the role of Aquaman’s stunningly beautiful love interest Mera, the legendary Willem Defoe will portray Aquaman’s ally Nuidis Vulko, Patrick Wilson is tackling the supervillain role of Orm Curry (aka Ocean Master) and Oscar winning actress Nicole Kidman will be insitu as Aquaman’s mother Atlanna. Other cast members of note are action legend Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, King of Xebel, Temuera Morrison as Aquaman’s human father Thomas Curry. An Aquaman film though would not be complete without a his Arch Nemesis Black Manta who will be played by relative newcomer Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

It is rumoured that there have been some significant changes made to the backstories of characters Nereus and Mera. What exactly those changes are and how they will affect the overall storyline remain to be seen.

For now though, even with a poster that could easily suggest that Jason Momoa wants to take over from Sir David Attenborough for Blue Planet 3, I have an open minded approach to D.C’s fish talking, water breathing prince of Atlantis.

D.C’s Aquaman is due for release in UK Cinemas on December 14.
